Look Ma, I'm on Shalom TV!

Shalom TV

This was a wonderful interview--please find the link below). The host, Mark Golub, a soulful and sophisticated man, loved my book, "An American Bride in Kabul." This alone would endear me to him but there is more, much more. He is an interviewer with passion and a knowledge base—and clearly, he actually read the book—something that is increasingly rare in the era of the savage sound bite. I had the privilege of being interviewed in the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and the 21st century. In the early days, interviews, especially in Canada and Europe, but also in the United States, were long, serious, thoughtful, challenging, and engaging. They were a joy.

Increasingly, over time, producers and assistant producers did most of the reading and composed the questions. The interviews became ever-shorter and harder to come by. Celebrity entertainers and lurid breaking news about sex set another kind of standard.

I miss the days when interviewers stood shoulder to shoulder with you intellectually or politically.

And so, Mark Golub brought me back to what I shall always view as the better days. We spoke for one full hour about the issues raised by my book—and about so much else: one's relationship with one's parents, the nature of forgiveness, the writer's life, growing up in Borough Park; the history of Jews in Muslim countries; fighting for women's religious rights in Israel; working with Muslim and ex-Muslim feminists and dissidents; studying the nature of anti-Semitic propaganda, the demonization of Israel, the challenge of Intifadas and Jihad; honor based violence, especially honor killing. Here it is. If you watch it, you might just enjoy it.
