I drove to the beach well before Shabbat, just to smell the sea air and listen to the surf. I thought I’d sit there for a half hour, breathe deeply, and find myself. Lo and behold and totally unexpected: At 6pm on Main Beach in East Hampton, the Jewish Center of East Hampton conducted Shabbat services on the beach. My people gathered, the cantor was a glorious soprano, the rabbi or assistant rabbi blew the shofar, and it was quite an unexpected joy. They invited us all back for next Shabbat—and for erev Rosh Hashana on the beach as well.
